Give the Gift of Homemade Rosemary Oil

Fresh rosemary is a welcome addition in everything from hair care products to your kitchen shelves. Drizzle it over fresh baked bread and salads, or just uncap a bottle to give your senses a pleasant little kick. Preparing your own bottles of rosemary oil and giving them away as Christmas gifts shows you care without spending a fortune. It’s also a beautiful gesture that shows forethought and class on the part of the gift giver. Somewhere out there, Martha Stewart is applauding!

If you don’t have a rosemary bush and don’t have a friend or neighbor that minds your clipping off a sprig or two, hunt for it at a Whole Foods or Fresh Market store where it’ll likely be the next best thing to grown from your own back yard.
These 1/4 ltr. decorative glass bottles (pictured with this post) are from the Container Store and make the perfect presentation for this inexpensive Christmas project; you’ll see when you click the link that the cost is well under $10.

Rosemary Oil Instructions

First clean and dry your rosemary. Wash the herbs with a slightly damp washcloth and set them aside to dry. To make 5 bottles, we recommend heating 2 cups of olive oil in a sauce pan; heat on low until warm—not hot, as you want to retain the olive oil’s healthful properties.

Place 2 or 3 sprigs of rosemary into each glass bottle and carefully pour the warm olive oil inside. Seal the bottle with a lid or cork, and place on a window sill that receives indirect sunlight. Let the rosemary infuse into the oil for about a week, and then include it in your next Christmas care package. Places like the container store let you shop for fun and decorative labels to accent your homemade creation.

You can also read archived material from our blog (like Cool Down With Mint!) on various and sundry things you can do with fresh herbs (especially rosemary!), and how to recognize edible plants that might be, unbeknownst to you, growing at your house. You never know what’s out there…. until you take the time explore!

See you soon, with another TOP NANA Christmas Countdown item : )!!!
